Evaluation Q1: Planning

Media A2 Analysis:

Q1:

  • Textual analysis of camera, editing, sound and mise-en-sene (of our own video/print)

Camera: (will show stills from our film)

  • Many shots were used in our short film:

  • CU: Show character’s facial expression/emotions
  • Wide shot: show full body(costume), as well as the background/scenery
  • Medium shot: used to show body language
  • Handheld shots: we’ve used handheld shots during scenes that show movement and urgency(the ‘chase scene’) à makes the audience feel as though they are part of the scene

Editing:

  • Colour correction
  • Making use of cropping to create a shutter-like effect
  • Video effects to create ominous atmosphere, e.g. bad tv effect (whenever slenderman-like character appeared)

  • Case Studies

à Comparison with case studies (can be any real media products that relate)

  • Critical theory

à analyse/consider narrative, representation, post-modernism

à two types: linear, and non-linear

à linear: has a clear beginning, middle and end

à non-linear: Will not have a  " " - non chronological, concurrent narrartives, circular

  • Todorov: Says that every story has a common structure - Establishment of a  situation/scenario

à this is then developed

à then there is a problem/distruption

à then an action/climax

à and finally a resolution

  • Levi Strauss: Structuralist

- Binary oppositions

à narratives need oppositions of conflict (tension which drives forward

e.g good vs. bad, male vs. female, crime vs. law and order)

  • Roland Barthes: Says narratives follow similar structures. He looks as codes in narratives

e.g. Visual codes - shot editing

Sound Codes - effect, music

à Barthes says that all narratives need many codes to progress narrative and to hold audience. There are 5 codes.

- 2 of them are of use to us:

- Action codes: give us very easily understood information about the next action

- Enigma codes: Withhold information - They pose questions.

  • Post Modernism:

- Mix and Match "Bricolage" - Lyotard

- Mix time periods colder style movies

- Mix genres, narrative, styles of story telling (e.g. moving from first to third person)

- Mixing High (e.g. shakespeare) and popular culture (e.g. slang, music, clothing)

- Intertextuality: specific reference made to another media product

Poster

Film Poster: Update/Final Product

- Today I managed to add the text at the bottom of the poster and also some promotional logos.

Journalism Used For Our Film Review

Romana Esa was in charge of writing the journalism for our film review and this is the final piece.

RELEASED: 14/01/2015

CERTIFICATE: 15

DIRECTOR: James Taasin, Romana Esa and Thomas Nguyen

CAST: Adeel Fareed, Claudio

RUNNING TIME: 03:35

PLOT: A young photographer (Claudio) goes to the local forest like any other trip. But what he doesn’t know turns out to haunt him. Slender Man (Adeel Fareed) finds his next target and disrupts his imagination via his pictures. He doesn’t know whats real anymore. As he realises he wasn’t the only one who has seen Slender Man he tries to find out more. What happens victims seems to be unknown.

Shutter, which was inspired by the original Slender Man video game, has been seen to be one of the most iconic images in thriller and horror combined: A folklore figure, as a tall man with a white face with absolute zero facial features. He is depicted by people and abducts countless young innocents. Slender Man played by Adeel Fareed, the directors gave him the opportunity to star in his very first hit movie. Even though we don’t get to see the real Adeel we see ‘The Slender Man’. This film served as great entertainment with its plot twists and disturbing characters. James used character’s that are familiar all around as well as introducing us to a new upcoming actor Adeel Fareed. So, in the spirit of movies keeping you on your toes, this review is being written with no revision or pause for a second thought – it’s a one hit of an opinion to say its likely to be the year’s most successful movie. Lets see how that works out. So, Claudio is back with his great acting skills, from waking up in the morning to getting chased by a faceless figure through a forest.  “It was the first time my actual face wasn’t in a movie it felt amazing, I could come to set looking ridiculous and get away with it” says Adeel at his interview with Review TV. Maybe its not always about the face and the genuine acting. Shutter has been a favourite for many celebrities due to its plot twist at the end and the demonic figure of slender man. Claudio is seen to be a young photographer who takes pictures as a living or hobby we aren’t so sure. When he sees something peculiar he starts to panic and leaves the forest. But he comes back. It would be stupid of him to come back AFTER seeing something so terrifying right? Would you go back? Being a short film and only having minimum characters some would see it to be quite boring, but it does all depends on your interests. From the producers of ‘Eventide’ this new freaky movie has really done well with short films out on the market. It’s disturbing, terrifying and keeps you on your toes. You don’t know what’s going to’ come out from a tree. When you are walking home through trees beware of that. Now not just the acting skills and story line that has interested the audience but in fact the camera man skills! Yes! Don’t you think the man behind the screen should get as much as credit. From zooming into Claudio’s face to hiding behind a tree. Really makes you feel like you’re in the movie. It can be seen in two perspectives. “It felt like I was the one chasing Claudio the rush was amazing” Jackie from London. “I felt like I was In Claudio’s shoes running away! Definitely worth watching” Adam from Birmingham. Shutter is a 2015 must watch!

THE VERDICT:

A video game into a successful short film filled with suspense and thrill. – Here comes the slender man.

5 STARS.

Film Review Update

- Thomas Nguyen was in charge of making our film review, and this is the final product. He had recently updated it by changing the font colour of some subheadings from blue to red as it did not follow our colour scheme of black, white and red. As well as that, he also changed the font from Comic Sans MS to Arial Bold in order to make the text seem more professional and keep consistency.

Film Poster Update: Making The Title Font

Film Poster Update: Making The Title Font

Today I've managed to create my own version of the font shown in our film poster/review pitch and add it to the film poster. The font shown on our film poster pitch was taken from dafont.com and was of low quality. Due to this I have had to try and create my own version of this font using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

- First I found a similar font to use(on Adobe Illustrator) as a substitute for the dafont.com font.

Dafont.com font:

Substitute Font (Trajan Pro):

- After that, I moved the text over to Photoshop where I saved the image as a vector image meaning that the images quality stays good. Then I coloured the text in red as we agreed on following a colour scheme of Black, White and Red.After doing this, I moved on to creating the cracked effect as shown on the dafont.com font.

- To do this, I took a vector image of black cracks (To ensure that the image of our title is of a high quality) and overlapped them with the image of our regular title. I then used the eraser tool to erase any cracks coming off the edge of the title.

- After doing this, I then used the magic wand tool and the quick selection tool to get rid of the image's background, making it so that it can be placed on any image, using the image it has been placed on as a background.

- I then placed the font on the poster, leaving me with just a few lines of text and promotion to add to the poster.

Film Review Layout

This is the layout for our film review, which Thomas will use to create our final product.

Making The Film Poster

Making The Film Poster:

I've been put in charge of designing and creating our groups film poster. To do so I have decided to use Adobe Photoshop as well as Adobe Illustrator.

- After conducting a photo shoot for our film poster, I selected a picture to use and set it as the poster's background on Photoshop.

- Then I looked at my case studies and took note of various items of text that are on the posters. After doing so, I added items of text which were relevant to our film such as; our actors names, quotes/slogans, and release dates.

- One idea we had for the poster was to show the 'slenderman' like figure in the camera lens of our actor shown on the poster. However, I noticed that the camera lens was not visible due to lighting. In order to put this idea into action, I created my own lens for the camera and placed it in along with a picture of the 'slenderman' like character in our film. This was done by overlapping layers and lowering the opacity of the camera lens.

- The title (which I will be making myself) and promotional logo and text still needs to be added to this poster before it is done.
